Why do the fees vary for short-stay or respite care?

Short-stay or respite arrangements at Somerforde use the same high standard of services as our full-time residents, from meals to activities, rooms to personal care. The fee reflects the duration and level of support needed rather than a lesser service.

Will I have to sell my home if I move into Somerforde?

It depends on your personal situation. If you have a partner still living in your property, it may not be counted in the means-testing. If you live alone, the property could form part of your assets. Many people do sell or rent out their home when moving into residential care — we recommend consulting an independent financial advisor. Somerforde can help provide information or direct you to appropriate support.

Are any benefits excluded from assessment when calculating care costs?

Yes. Standard benefits like the State Pension, Attendance Allowance and Disability Living Allowance are excluded from calculations when social services assess your contributions. Somerforde can provide links to guidance on what exactly is counted and what isn’t.

Can residents spend time outside?

Absolutely. Somerforde offers a beautifully landscaped garden, terraces and balcony access, and if needed, secure outdoor areas for specialist care. We also have a dedicated minibus so residents can enjoy day trips beyond the home. Fresh air and freedom matter.

Do I need to book a visit to look around?

We’d love to welcome you anytime! Drop by, have a look around and meet some of our team and residents. If you’d like to meet the Home Manager or have a detailed discussion, it’s best to call ahead to make sure we’re available and can give you our full attention.

How do I know if this is the right type of care home for me or my loved one?

A good first step is to talk with your GP or your local social services team to identify the level of care needed. Yes, the home is registered with the regulator, the Care Quality Commission (CQC), and our latest inspection rated the home as “Good” in all major areas. We believe in transparency: you’ll always see our current rating and inspection reports on our website and feel free to ask about them when you visit.

As everyone’s needs vary, we will assess each individual and agree on the level of support and care required with each resident, family members, and healthcare professionals where appropriate.
