Investing in Excellence: Somerforde's Commitment to Staff Development Through NVQ Training
At Somerforde, we believe that exceptional care starts with a team that is continually learning, developing, and growing. That's why we're proud to share that 13 of our 28 care staff are currently studying for National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs), with 16 team members having already achieved NVQ levels 3, 4, or 5.

What This Means for Your Care
NVQs are work-based qualifications that directly improve how care is delivered. They're not theoretical exams sat in classrooms, they're practical qualifications earned through real work, assessments, and demonstrated competence in delivering care.
Staff studying for NVQs are:
Deepening their knowledge of safeguarding, person-centred care, and health and safety
Developing professional skills in communication, dignity, and independence
Building confidence in complex situations, from managing medications to supporting emotional wellbeing
Showing commitment to their residents and to continuous improvement
When your relative is being supported by a qualified care worker, that person has proven they understand dignity, respect, and the best practice standards that underpin safe, effective care.
“These qualifications are designed to equip learners with the skills and knowledge needed to care for others in a broad range of health or social care settings.” City and Guilds
A Culture of Growth
What makes us proud isn't just the numbers, it's the culture these numbers represent. Staff who pursue NVQs are investing their own time and energy into becoming better at what they do. That commitment radiates through how they work with residents every single day.
Our 7 team members qualified at Level 5 also represent our next generation of leaders and managers, ensuring that Somerforde's values and standards continue to be upheld and developed.
Looking Forward
We will continue to support our team in pursuing qualifications that matter. Whether someone is taking their first step with Level 3 or progressing to management, we're committed to removing barriers to learning, training support, study time, and mentoring from experienced colleagues.
Care excellence doesn't happen by accident. It's built by teams who care enough to keep learning, and residents who deserve nothing less.
Somerforde Care Home is committed to providing person-centred, dignified care. Our team's ongoing development through NVQs is part of that commitment.
